RI Universities Cannot Compete Internationally

Universities in Indonesia are having difficulties matching the world’s prominent universities and even Asia’s best.

None of our universities are on the list of the 100 best Asian universities in 2013, according to Times Higher Education, while Singapore, Thailand and Malaysia have institutions on the list. Despite the abundant resources spent by the government on improving the quality of education, it seems our “best universities” cannot even be the best (or even close to the best) in ASEAN, let alone in Asia or globally. Here are some problems we face in improving our higher education system.

First, the best people do not become lecturers. All parents, if they had the choice, would pick the best people to teach their children. It is widely accepted that the quality of education systems cannot exceed the quality of teachers.

However, the best students have no desire to become lecturers. They usually go to large multinational companies, which compete aggressively to recruit our best graduates. Some companies provide scholarships to top students, with the agreement that the students must work for the companies following graduation.

On the contrary, our universities do not usually have clear recruitment strategies and procedures. University officials are mostly very passive and not very creative when it comes to recruiting new lecturers. Faculty staff do not bother to attract talented candidates or seriously look at selecting the best students who could become excellent teachers.

Second, there is no financial security for lecturers. The main salary of a lecturer is insignificant compared to those with similar education levels who work in other industries. Low salaries make university lecturer positions unattractive to the country’s best and brightest.

There are many great Indonesian PhD holders who have opted to teach in universities abroad, earning much more than they would have done working in Indonesian universities. Unfortunately, we cannot expect them to return to Indonesia to strengthen our educational systems for many reasons, one being the amount of salary involved.

Further, faculty members resort to other sources of income to survive. The side jobs include teaching in other universities, becoming consultants, establishing a business and public speaking. These side jobs have significantly distracted our lecturers from their commitment to the quality of higher education.

As a result, being a lecturer is a full-time job only on paper. Some are even willing to cancel classes for these side jobs, especially if the jobs provide significant monetary incentives. Further, many offices of lecturers are vacant most of the time. This would never happen in good universities with established governing systems.

Therefore, if the Education and Culture Ministry has difficulties finding ways to absorb the 20 percent budget from the government, it might start thinking about increasing the salaries of university lecturers.

Third, reward and punishment systems are ineffective. University lecturers are perceived as the most valuable assets to the academic institutions. In fact, some argue the lecturers are the university itself, as most decisions concerning the institution are made by lecturers. However, these so called “assets” can be classified into three groups: Operating assets, non-operating assets and troubled assets.

Many faculty members are great teachers, productive researchers and effective administrators (operating assets), while some of them are ineffective in their main assignments (non-operating assets), and there are usually a few who create chronic problems for the institution and who are persistent in their bad behavior (troubled assets).

Ideally, the operating assets are rewarded, the non-operating assets are warned or further trained and the troubled assets are “liquidated”. Unfortunately, what sometimes happens is that the institution punishes the high performing (usually young) lecturers by giving them more assignments (with no financial incentives), while the university does not have the authority to warn misbehaving, or fire troubled lecturers.

Fourth, there is too much teaching and not enough research. To promote research, world-class universities usually limit teaching loads to three or fewer courses per semester for their faculty. Some lecturers hired to conduct research will teach even fewer classes.

College deans are pure administrators and they do not usually teach, while department heads might teach one class per semester. Their income is not dependent upon how many classes they teach as they receive a fixed salary, and the teaching load is agreed during the hiring process.

Yet in Indonesia, many lecturers are severely overloaded as they might teach more than 10 classes per semester — with financial incentives for teaching more classes. Even deans, department heads and other officials sometimes teach many classes. Thus, it is difficult for a lecturer to control his teaching quality and to find time for research.

What usually happens is that our lecturers will co-author studies with their students and shift the research workload to the students. In good universities, most lecturers co-author with other lecturers. This difference in research partnerships definitely affects the quality of research.

Even lecturers in a so-called “teaching university” abroad do not usually teach more than five classes per semester.

A university in Indonesia wanting to declare itself a “research university” should limit the teaching load of its faculty members to provide space for research. We need to establish a compensation system to reduce the teaching load without lowering the income, and a system that fosters research.

LETTER

Hallo readers,
Thank you very much for waiting me, I enjoyed your letter. I have received many letters from your country who read “Hello English Magazine”. So far I think about fifty letters.
I am 13 years old and in the eight grade at Centennial Junior High School. We have three grades in my school: seventh, eighth, and ninth. My hobbies are talking on the telephone to my friends and listening to music on the radio. I also like to do many crafts, I make teddy bears by hand and embroider.
I don’t speak your language and I haven’t been to your country, though I would like to. I am learning Spanish in school. I have been taking it for two years.
I live in a small city at the edge of the Rocky Mountains in Colorado. Off and all winter we get lot of snow. I don’t snow-ski but many people do in our state. The Rocky Mountains cover several states around us.
Right now it is the month of December. Outside the leaves are gone from the trees and there is snow on the ground. Everyone is getting ready for the Christmas holiday when we exchange presents and decorate a large evergreen tree. School children like this holiday because they can be with their family and I’ll be visiting my grandmother and grandfather in Dallas, Texas. My grandfather is the one who wrote a letter in “Hello Magazine”.
I thank you again for waiting me and I hope to receive more letter in the future.

TOHOSHINKI - With All My Heart

The shirt’s button, reflected in the mirror, hangs wrongly
Such a trivial thing, if you were here, I’d (think) be glad
In the time that we can’t see each other, our love strengthens
Though (I) busily pass by the waiting days,
even so, just like this…like this…
I want to see you, I will always think of you
From my heart
Once more-my heart-I want to give [transfer] it to you.
If you _(call?)_, I will go (be there)
To laugh by your side
No matter what kind of day it is I will always think of you
From my heart
Now, once again-your heart-I won’t let it go
If you cry, I will go (be there)
I want to always protect you
If you wish
I will strive(?) for everything
I want to realize that eternal dream
No matter how many times -too heart- my smile for you
In sadness, in happiness, I (With all my heart)
I’ll be there for you
No matter what I’ll be there for you want to laugh by your side

JACQUES YVES COUSTEAU BEHIND THE SHOW

Ever watched an under the sea movie and imagined who was behind it? That person was man from France Jacques Yves Cousteau (1910-1997). He had a number of occupations during his life, among other naval officer, explorer, ecologist, filmmaker, and scientist who studied the sea and all forms of life in water. He also co-developed the aqua-lung project.
When he was in the Navy, he carried out his first under water experiments wearing underwater goggles, predeccessors of the modern diving mask lent by his friend, Philippe Tailliez.
During the 1940s Cousteau developed the design o aqua-lung into the open circuit scuba technology that we use today.

TOHOSHINKI – STAND BY U

Since the day you left without a word of goodbye
I feel that the scenery around me has changed.
The promise I made
that I would become your everything
and the incomplete memories
have also changed.

When you were crying by yourself back then,
if only had I run to you
you would still be by my side.
If I was given one more chance,
I would tell you once again
that I love you.
But the words that contain my overflowing feelings
cannot reach you anymore.

Where are you now?
Who are you being with?
What kind of clothes are you wearing?
What are doing and laughing at?
I am right here.
Even now, I am right here.
And I still believe that we will see each other again.
You're the only one I'm thinking of.

Just once more,
I want you to stand at my back with your tied hair
asking me "Guess who it is~~~"
and expecting me to say out your name.*
Just the two of us being silly like that day by day.

I can't forget you,
But the truth is, I don't want to forget you.
I can't feel even a bit of happiness
because you're not by my side.
No matter how hard I try,
I'll end up crying
and my tears just won't stop.

Where are you now?
Who are you being with?
What kind of clothes are you wearing?
What are doing and laughing at?
I am right here.
Even now, I am right here.
I still believe that we will see each other again.
You're the only one I'm thinking of.

Therefore, I am right here
singing the song by myself.
Even though I don't have any reason to embrace this pain anymore,
I can't help doing it.

Even if I know that the days
when you were by my side making my world shine
won't come back again,
and no matter what will happen,
no matter how far I'm lost,
I never ever want to forget that my heart has chosen to love you.

No matter where you are,
no matter who you are being with,
no matter what kind of dream you are dreaming of,
or what you are doing and laughing at,
I will be here forever.
Even now, I right am here,
believing in a day that we will meet again.

This feeling won't change,
and you are the only one I'm thinking of.
This feeling won't change,
and you are the only one I'm thinking of.

TVXQ – PICTURE OF YOU

After the after glow sets,
I'm going towards you,
Following the lights which turn on one by one
I'll embrace you,
Before the cold wind makes your shoulders flinch
I love you,
The foolish you,
You're so precious to me

As much as the sun that rises above you,
I'll keep you safe as much as you've waited for me, with this glaring heart,
All the dreams I've prayed for,
They're going towards you with my sincere scent

I hope that my wishes of smiling next to you every new morning,
Will be able to come true
I'll wait for you,
I'll never let go of your hands,
Even if it's only tears,
I'll wipe them away for you
Although we are not able to see the end,
No matter how bumpy our road is,
I'll promise you, please be mine

As much as the sun that rises above you,
I'll keep you safe as much as you've waited for me, with this glaring heart,
All the dreams I've prayed for,
They're going towards you with my sincere scent,
More than the air I breathe,

'I love you' 'You're the only one',
I want to yell those words out into the sky
I love you, my heart which feels like bursting is calling out to you
No matter how many times they find us,
No matter if we can't breathe,

Like those invisible flower-like smiles,
Which shine just like the stars,
I'll keep you safe beautifully

As much as the sun that rises above you,
I'll keep you safe as much as you've waited for me, with this glaring heart,
I love you, I love you,

You're the most beautiful in this world,
This dream-like heart,
More than the air I breathe

TVXQ – HOLDING BACK THE TEARS

A faded white painting and my slightly vanished scent are hidden inside an eye-blinding cloud

My wordless heart Slowly starts to move my feelings
Those times that slipped through
Are in my hands

I'm holding back the tears
I walk trying to lessen the weight of my heart
To a place that is neither close nor far
Where a different me stands
I will not cry

I bring my two hands together once again
In a place I live the present life instead of the memories

Though it seems stupid, we’re always together
The pain that I want to let go
Dries the tears that flows through my body

I'm holding back the tears
I walk trying to lessen the weight of my heart
To a place that is neither close nor far
Where a different me stands
I will not cry

I'm holding back the tears
I run adding to the weight of my faith
To a place that is neither high nor low
Where a different me stands again
With a small smile I can laugh

SEMINAR MUSICCONOMY

1. Musik klasik
2. Musik rakyat / musik tradisional
3. Musik keagamaan
a. Gambus
b. Kasidah
c. Nasyid
4. Blues
5. Jazz
6. Country
7. Rock
8. Pop
9. RnB
10. Musik popular
11. Musik dunia

UG membuat berbagai situs, seperti :
1. StudentSite

Macam-Macam Penularan HIV:

2. Lewat cairan sperma dan cairan vagina:
  • Melalui hubugan seks pentratif tanpa mengunakan kondom

Ciri-Ciri Seseorang Tertular HIV:

2.      Demam tinggi  (lebih dari 1 bulan)
3.      Diare berkepanjangan (lebih dari 1 bulan)
Gejala-gejala tambahan (gejala minor)
1.      Batuk berkepanjangan (lebih dari 1 bulan)
2.      Kelainan kulit dan iritasi (gatal)
3.      Infeksi jamur pada mulut dan kerongkongan (sariawan)
4.      Pembengkakan kelenjar getah bening diseluruh tubuh, sepeti di bawah teliga, leher, ketiak, dan lipatan paha.
5.      Bercak-bercak cokelat di kulit
6.      Gangguan pada penglihatan dan daya ingat.

Penanganan
